Introduction: Opening Up the Dialogue
The So Freakin’ Healthy Podcast has always been a space where honesty and authenticity reign. In our latest episode, I opened up about a deeply personal journey that my family and I have been navigating—one filled with challenges, revelations, and resilience. It’s a story that many might relate to, yet few feel comfortable discussing.
Sky’s Journey: From Symptoms to Diagnosis
At around 2022, my eldest child, Sky, began experiencing severe GI symptoms that puzzled both traditional and functional medicine practitioners alike. As a functional medicine health coach and gut health specialist, I naturally threw myself into finding solutions, seeking help from various medical experts. Despite seeing a spectrum of professionals—from pediatricians to holistic experts—his condition worsened, leading to an eventual hospital stay that ruled out physical ailments and confirmed ARFID. This revelation shifted our focus to the intense phobia of vomiting, which was the root cause of Sky’s anxiety around eating.
Understanding ARFID: A New Frontier
ARFID presents differently from traditional eating disorders, often misunderstood due to its novelty as a diagnosis. It is imperative for those affected by or suspecting ARFID to educate themselves and seek proper support. I encourage exploring recent articles and engaging with support groups that can offer guidance and solidarity.
Sky's journey with ARFID—a relatively unknown eating disorder rooted in trauma rather than body image—affected our entire family. The emotional and mental toll on my husband, George, our other son, Mika, and myself was profound. Mika, too, faced difficulties at a pivotal time in his life, while George shouldered increased financial responsibilities and felt the emotional weight of watching our son suffer. As someone used to helping others, I found myself grappling with an identity crisis, questioning my abilities as both a mother and a coach.
The Impact on Our Family: Unveiling Burnout and the Path to Recovery
Burnout crept in slowly but surely, blending with the shadows of depression. The line between professional and personal life blurred, and I found myself unable to function or engage with the world as I once did. Recognizing the need for change, I began therapy, explored the impacts of medication, and started microdosing medical marijuana—a step towards regaining control and reclaiming my energy.
The Healing Process: Embracing Vulnerability and Growth
Through this journey, I've learned the importance of vulnerability and the power of shared experiences. Coming to terms with my son's illness, allowing myself to accept help, and utilizing tools like therapy and medical marijuana have been crucial in my recovery process. These actions not only provided relief, but also illuminated a path forward—both for my family and for me as an individual.
Moving Forward: Hope and Resilience
*2024 UPDATE: Sky is doing incredibly well and is out of the woods. He's a thriving, energetic teen, and although still has some "leftover" trauma, he's proven himself to be resilient and is focusing on moving forward in a healthy and happy way ❤️
While the journey is far from over, I see light at the end of this tunnel. Sky's path to healing continues, and as a family, we are learning, growing, and supporting each other every step of the way. Sharing our story has been a liberating experience and my hope is that it offers solace and a sense of community to others facing similar challenges. Life may not always be easy, but with determination, understanding, and support, we can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
Conclusion: A Call for Connection and Understanding
My hope in sharing our story is to connect with those who may be facing similar battles. ARFID, though not widely known, is a serious eating disorder that deserves attention and understanding. Sharing experiences not only aids our healing but possibly shines a light for others in darkness. Together, we can navigate these challenges, fostering a community of empathy and support.
